Fishing Program
At Valhalla Lodge you will fish the top producing streams in the Lake Iliamna - Katmai - Bristol Bay areas.

A combination of floatplane flyouts, river jet-boats, and float trips with inflatable rafts are used to reach these blue ribbon streams.

A special attraction at Valhalla Lodge is our excellent stream fishing just a few minutes from the lodge by river jet-boat.

Flightseeing, exploring wild, remote streams, wildlife viewing, fishing with the bears...it's an Alaska adventure!

June
A great month for rainbow trout, arctic char, arctic grayling, lake trout, and northern pike. By the middle of June Chinook ("King Salmon") begin their migration into freshwater streams. This is a classic "Dry Fly" month for trout and grayling.

July
Rainbow, char, lake trout, grayling, and northern pike. The king salmon, sockeye, and chum salmon are entering the rivers by the millions.

August
Rainbow, char, dolly varden, and grayling. Sockeye salmon fish well through the early part of August. Coho ("Silver Salmon"), pink, and chum salmon are plentiful.

September
A truly great month for large rainbow trout, char, and silver salmon. Arctic char and dolly varden trout have their beautiful fall spawning colors.

Catch and Release

Our area is Alaska's designated premier Wild Trout Area. The best streams are classifieds as "Catch and Release" for rainbow trout.

The take-home limits of salmon are very generous and Valhalla Lodge provides freezing, packaging, and wet-lok boxing of your fish.

Quality state of the art replica taxidermy is available for all species of sport fish.

2010 Fishing Forecast

June: Low snowfall over the winter has put our streams in excellent condition. Fly fishing for rainbow trout will be excellent! Nushagak River king salmon are scheduled to start in by mid-June. An estimated 120,000 kings should head upriver past the sonar counting stations this season.

July: Nushagak king salmon will continue fishing good to mid-July, then tail off. Chrome-bright chum salmon follow the kings in early July on the Nushagak and are a lot of fun on the fly rod. Kvichak River sockeye will arrive by the millions in early July. Pound for pound, these chrome-bright sockeyes are great sport on the fly rod! The rainbow trout fishing will also remain very good!

August: Nushagak River silver salmon show up in early August. These fresh silvers are very aggressive to take a fly and are great sport! By mid-August, Kvichak River silvers start migrating into the feeder streams of Lake Iliamna and are a lot of fun. Fish for big rainbows and big silvers on the same streams! The Katmai Coast silvers show up mid-August as well. These coastal silvers, a few minutes out of salt water into the freshwater streams, are awesome on the fly rod! The rainbow trout fishing on the Iliamna area streams will be truly outstanding! And, the bear photography provides a unique adventure.

September: BIG rainbow trout and BIG silver salmon on the fly rod. Can't say enough how terrific this September fishing is!! Hooking into a 30-inch plus rainbow can be a lifetime achievement.

See you in 2010!
